Alpha Chapter HouseThe significance of Sigma Pi at Vincennes University is one of great depth. Sigma Pi was founded at the University on February 26,1897.

Four Vincennes University students and cadets decided to form a literary society in the form of a fraternity. They originally called themselves Tau Phi Delta until 1907 when the fraternity renamed itself Sigma Pi.

It was after this that Sigma Pi grew and expanded to other colleges and universities. It is now an international greek fraternity with over 120 chapters across the nation and nearly 90,000 alumni.

As you take a look across the campus, many of the Universities most prominent figures were Sigma Pi alumni.

The Learning Resource Center was named after Vincennes and Alpha Chapters most outstanding alumnus, Judge Curtis G. Shake.  Judge Shake was a former Indiana Supreme Court Judge, Executive Presiding Judge of the US Ware Crime Tribunals at Nuremberg, Germany, and Chairman of the Vincennes University Board of Trustees.

If you go inside you will find the Byron R. Lewis historical library. This library was named in honor of another Alpha Chapter outstanding alumni who contributed much time and money to his alma matter.  Brother Lewis was also responsible for starting Sigma Pi's second chapter at the University of Illinois.

The Issac K. Beckes Student Union was named after another prominent Vincennes and Alpha Chapter alumnus. Dr. Beckes was former Vincennes University President from 1950 to 1980.

Davis Hall was named after Walter A. Davis who was another outstanding alumnus who served Vincennes University as president from 1924 to 1950.

Sigma Pi also has a landmark for its 100th anniversary at Vincennes University. On campus sits a Centinnial Clock Tower that holds the engraved names to the many influential alumni that have prospered through their memberships in Sigma Pi.

Sigma Pi has over 110 years of history on the Vincennes campus. The brothers encourage all who are interested in learning more to come to come by and visit.
